Teasers are always so fun. But I have to tell you I wasn’t sure which new paragraph to share. 13 ON HALLOWEEN, my first book in the YA coming of age fantasy series, comes out this September and I’d would LOVE to share its first paragraph, but I want to wait just a bit longer:) So, I decided to post a paragraph from a science-fiction story I’m working on now and have been writing for a few years. The story is called TRANSFER STUDENT, about Ashley, a Beverley Hills surfer fashionista, who swipes lives with Rhoe, a boy geek alien from Planet Retha, when his teleporting experiment goes bad. They survive each others’ lives only to fall in love with each other a galaxy apart. Their story is told in two POVs.
Here’s Ashley’s first Paragraph:
In Kindergarten, when I drew pictures of the night sky, I pressed hard on my crayon and colored every millimeter of manila drawing paper a waxy black. My teacher, Mrs. Turek, would address my starless skies at the parent-teacher conference that year. Before she knew any better, my teacher would guide my hand. When I left gaps where the points should be, we made small star strokes. Chanel No. 5 wafted from behind Mrs. Turek’s gnarly ear, an eyelash away. Beyond her pearl earring, just below her way-too-big upper lip, my teacher’s permanently suntanned finger curled over mine, around my yellow Crayola, and squeezed. No matter how hard I tried, I could never draw yellow stars.
Here’s Rhoe’s first part:
“Starjumping or lightbending or teleporting or transporting or whatever-you-call-it isn’t possible. We can’t starjump,” Yuke says on our walk home, flicking his hand to the sky.
I step off the trail into The Golden Terrace.
“We’re too old to believe in all that. You don’t want to be a quark your whole life, do you?” Yuke won’t let it go.
He kicks a rock out of the dirt and it floats over the field of tall golden grass, alive in the warm evening breeze, until the field swallows it whole.
Yuke only cares about one thing lately–girls. Well, really just one girl, Xanny. Like she’d ever couple with him.
This is such great fun! There’s RUMBLINGS of a YA INDIE CARNIVAL GIVEAWAY on our September 9th post. We are going to shake it up a little bit. So stay tuned for an announcement next week!

Can’t wait to read the rest of this–I find sci-fi so fascinating–what the writer’s mind can make you feel is real. Great job!
🙂 Thanks Patti. I’m happy you want to read more. Looking forward to releasing TRANSFER STUDENT in February of 2012!
Laura that is NOT fair! Teasers aren’t fair. How long until this one comes out?! It sounds amazing.
Hee-hee:) TY! I’m thinking Feb 2012 for TRANSFER STUDENT. I wrote it in 2009 and I’ve been working on it off and on for the last few years. #gratitude
cool, diffrent
🙂 Thanks!
so when will it be finished
It’s finished, I’m just polishing it up now. Will be ready very soon. I’m hoping to release in Jan or Feb 2012:)
LOVE sci-fi and this sounds really interesting. I love that it’s told from both of their viewpoints! So they swipe lives? Can’t wait to see how adept Rhoe is with keeping up Ashley’s fashionista image….can a boy from another galaxy successfully accessorize here on 21st century Earth? 😉
That IS the question:) Hee-hee. Glad you like the teaser. I’ve been working on this one for a few years and am looking forward to it’s release. Lots of awkward, funny moments. Rhoe AND Ashley have their hands full. Ashley is on the run from the Rethan Secret Police!
Your writing makes it easy to put myself into the story and become a passive bystander. Amazing!
Thanks so much, Tina:) A great compliment esp. since one of the characters is an alien:) Looking forward to Transfer Student’s release!
Laura, this sounds like a great story. I’m also excited about your Halloween book. It sounds like another fantastic read.
Thanks for stopping by Alicia:) And thanks for kind words about TRANSFER STUDENT. Having lots of fun with world-building! 🙂
